About Hangul
I suppose I should start this document with a little introduction to Hangul. You can find more about it in the links section, but here's a quick summary.
Many Westerners are terrified when someone even mentions an Eastern writing system. In their minds, the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other writing sytems of Asia are a chaotic mess of haphazard scribbles and doodles. In fact, many people believe that all of these systems are one and the same, only because they appear so to the untrained eye.
Allow me to train you a bit. You see, Korean is actually an alphabetic system! Yes, I just said alphabetic. That puts it in the same category as English. I bet you're starting to think this isn't so bad. Well, there's more. Not only is Korean alphabetic, but it is considered one of the best and most easy to learn writing systems in the world. Most Korean children are quite proficient in writing and reading at the age of 5!
The reason for this is because Korean is a featural writing system. But wait, didn't you just say it was alphabetic? Yes, it's a featural alphabet. Featural means that the letters are organized together and shaped based upon the way they are articulated. For example, letters pronounced with the lips (b, m, p) are based upon a similar shape with modifications. This makes it very easy to learn!
There's a short introduction to the fantastic Korean writing system. I hope you enjoy this document and put this system to some use.
